More on Spam, Gmail, and Google Talk

Posted in General at 2:44 pm by Nicholas

After much testing and tweaking of my Double-Pass Spam Filtering with Gmail entry, I’m back to a single-pass system (at least on the server side) — not because I’ve dropped the Gmail forwarding setup, but because I’ve disabled DreamHost’s SpamAssassin support. After just a week of training, Gmail’s spam control was already doing a much better job, and I was getting a few odd false positives from SpamAssassin, so I’m now Gmail-only for filtering. If you followed the instructions in my post, you might want to check to make sure you have the latest version — my first couple of tries resulted in some infrequent mail loop problems. I ended up using formail to remove a Delivered-To header before forwarding the message to Gmail; that cleared it all up.

Also, for a variety of reasons including forcing myself to step away from the computer more often, I’m considering reducing my instant messenger usage to a single account — down from five, on five separate networks. Google Talk is my network of choice, so if you don’t have my Google Talk address, email me and ask. If you don’t have my email address, either, you may be one of the reasons I need to step away from the computer more often.
